No Jesus, No Peace -- Know Jesus, Know Peace

You will often hear people describe a myriad of ways to attain peace of mind and inner calmness in their lives.

Good things like going for a walk, a bike ride, camping, hiking, lighting a candle, a road trip to the beach, vocation, volunteering, donating to charity, or mentoring someone are various activities that could bring a sense of peace.

You could also make peace with another person that you had conflict with and that could also bring peace in your relationships.

The methods for attaining peace are endless. The reality is you could spend your entire life having peaceful experiences and miss the ultimate peace.

Christianity has much to say about the topic of peace:

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." (John 14:27)

In the context of this verse, Jesus had spent three years with his closest disciples and he would be leaving them to lay down his life on the cross. Soon they would be separated by his death, and the time to apply the teaching and godly example Jesus modeled for them was underway.

Though his disciples would soon be without his physical presence, they would not be without his peace.

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you."

Aware of the thoughts and feelings of his disciples, Jesus addresses their sadness, fear, and insecurity of what the future holds for them without him physically by their side.

"Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid."

Jesus was well aware that his disciples could find some sort of peace that this world could offer apart from him, but it would not be comparable to the peace he promises to give. It is no wonder he is called the prince of peace (Is 9:6).

"Not as the world gives do I give to you."

This peace included the gift of the holy spirit that would indwell the disciples and they would experience this after his death, burial and resurrection. This is how the presence of God now manifest himself in every believer today.

"The Bible links peace and God in at least four ways: There is the saving peace that God made with us at the cross, and the ongoing inner peace God gives us in our souls. These twin gifts in turn bring two more blessings for the Christian believer. They enable us to pursue relational peace with others in this life. Moreover, they guarantee us an endless life of future situational peace in the world to come, “a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness” (2 Pet. 3:13)."

Do you want this peace that comes from the prince of peace?
